I recently had the pleasure of photographing Monique Murphy for an updated set of actor headshots, and it was such a fun session from start to finish.
Monique shared that she had not had professional actor headshots taken since she was around eight years old. She even showed me one of her childhood headshots, which was absolutely adorable. Safe to say, it was definitely time for an update.
For the session, the fabulous Fatima handled both hair and makeup, creating a polished, natural look that enhanced Monique’s features while still keeping everything authentic and casting-friendly. Natural makeup for actor headshots is always one of my favourite approaches because it allows the actor’s real essence to come through.
Even though Monique hadn’t done many photoshoots since childhood, she completely nailed the experience. She was relaxed, fun, and easy to work with from the moment we started. We played music, explored different wardrobe options, and created a variety of looks throughout the session. She brought a great selection of clothing, including blazers and accessories that added depth and range to her gallery. I especially loved how blue looked on her, it really complemented her features beautifully.
Monique has one of those looks that photographs effortlessly. The camera truly loves her. Beyond that, she is warm, grounded, and friendly, which made the whole shoot feel easy and collaborative. Those qualities always translate into stronger portraits.
One of the reasons I love photographing actors is that every session feels unique. Each actor brings their own energy, personality, and range into the studio. My goal is always to create an environment where people feel comfortable enough to let their authentic expression come through. When that happens, the strongest headshots naturally follow.
