1950s Fashion Behind the Scenes Editorial Shoot

Some photo shoots are about creating beautiful portraits. Others are about building an entire world. This 1950s fashion-inspired editorial was one of those shoots where storytelling became just as important as the final image.

The concept was to create the feeling of stepping behind the curtain of a glamorous 1950s photo session, the moments before the flash, the quiet preparation, the teamwork, the energy between creative people making something beautiful together. Rather than only photographing polished final poses, I wanted to capture the atmosphere, character interactions, and behind-the-scenes magic of what that era may have felt like.

For this story, each person played a role. Maissa portrayed the model. Petra played the photographer. Krista portrayed the makeup artist. Together, they brought the scene to life with personality, movement, and believable chemistry.

A huge part of what made this shoot work was Fatima, who created all hair and makeup looks on set. She did an incredible job designing different looks for each character so they felt distinct while still fitting cohesively within the same vintage world. Fatima has a rare ability to elevate every project she touches. She brings calmness, talent, flexibility, and strong instincts to set, and every time she is involved, the shoot becomes smoother and stronger.

This project also took a lot of preparation behind the scenes. I built an old Hollywood-inspired vanity mirror with bulbs to create the right atmosphere. That required problem solving, since standard vanity lighting is usually designed for bathrooms rather than studio walls. I sourced a vintage camera on Facebook Marketplace, found a makeup belt from another seller, and gathered wardrobe pieces from thrift stores including a blazer for Petra’s photographer character. Maissa selected her own wardrobe and also helped style Krista, which added another layer of collaboration to the set.

Because hair and makeup was happening throughout the day, I was able to work efficiently by photographing individual portraits as each person became ready. In addition to the editorial story images, I also captured professional actor headshots for each participant so everyone left with images useful for their own careers. I always love when a creative session can be both artistic and practical.

What I love most about shoots like this is that they become more than “pretty photos.” Once there is character, story, intention, and interaction, the images gain depth. A glance between two people, a hand adjusting lipstick, a photographer lining up a shot, these details turn static portraits into something cinematic and alive.

Yes, these productions take more work. There is more planning, more styling, more moving pieces. But when you have the right team, it becomes pure joy. Working with this group was an absolute pleasure, and their talent, warmth, and commitment made the whole concept come alive.

Creating stories through photography is one of my favourite things to do. It reminds me that a photograph can hold much more than a face, it can hold a whole little world.
