Mel at Home | A Quiet Portrait of Identity

This set was originally created for my Unmasking series as Mel’s “unmasked” concept. Since Mel and I photograph together often, we later created another set that felt even more aligned with her energy and spirit, so that series ultimately took a different direction.

Even so, I still deeply love these images.

There is something special about photographing someone in their own space, where the performance of the outside world softens and everyday truth begins to breathe. These portraits show Mel at home, guitar in hand, settled into the rhythm of her own world. The kind of moments you might witness if you were a quiet observer in the corner of the room.

We also created a few frames where she meets the camera directly, inviting the viewer in for a more personal connection. But overall, this series captures something gentler: a slower side of identity, the version of self that exists in the quiet of morning light, familiar walls, and private rituals.

While another concept may have become the stronger fit for Unmasking, these photographs remain just as meaningful. They reveal Mel in a softer register, not louder, not bigger, simply present. And sometimes that kind of honesty speaks in a whisper.
