This was my second time photographing Alex Chabot, who is represented by Angie’s Models, and I was just as excited to work with him again. Alex is one of those people who makes a photoshoot easy. He’s friendly, easygoing, and always up for trying new ideas, which makes the creative process feel effortless.

Since it was summer, we decided to take advantage of the weather and head outdoors instead of staying in the studio. We photographed just below the Alexandra Bridge on the Quebec side, making this the second time this summer that I’ve had the chance to create portraits around one of my favourite Ottawa locations. The combination of the bridge, the water, and the surrounding landscape gave us a beautiful backdrop that simply can’t be recreated in the studio.

A few weeks earlier, I had visited Toronto and spent some time with my longtime photographer friend Greg. We’ve known each other for well over a decade, and during my visit he generously lent me his battery pack so I could bring my studio strobes outdoors. As someone who absolutely loves shaping light, this opened up so many creative possibilities. Being able to combine dramatic studio lighting with a natural outdoor environment is incredibly inspiring, and I couldn’t wait to put it to use.

A huge thank you to Alex for suggesting such a fantastic location and for embracing another photography adventure with me. Collaboration is always at its best when everyone is willing to experiment, and I think that excitement really comes through in these images.

I’d also like to thank my husband, Vince, for coming along to help. While I was focused on creating portraits, he kept an eye on the equipment and made sure everything stayed safe. Having that extra set of hands gives me the freedom to fully concentrate on photographing my subject, especially when working with lighting gear outdoors.
