Some of my favourite creative shoots begin with very little planning.

My friend Neil, a local photographer, and I decided it would be fun to head downtown together, explore the city, and see what kind of images we could create along the way. Rather than arriving with a detailed shot list or specific locations in mind, we wanted to leave room for spontaneity and discovery.

After putting out a call for a model, the wonderful Celeste, someone I have had the pleasure of photographing multiple times over the years, reached out and was quickly selected for the shoot.

Celeste arrived in a flowing red dress with matching lipstick and sleek straight hair, looking effortlessly elegant and bringing exactly the kind of energy that works so well for these exploratory sessions. One of my favourite things about working with Celeste is how positive, adaptable, and easygoing she is. She embraces ideas quickly and isn’t afraid to experiment, which makes creative shoots like this incredibly rewarding.

One aspect of photography that continually excites me is finding stories within locations rather than simply searching for the prettiest backgrounds. Beautiful locations certainly have their place, but sometimes the most interesting photographs emerge from spaces most people would walk past without a second glance.

One of those moments happened when we came across a construction site surrounded by industrial metal fencing. Instead of seeing a barrier, I saw a scene.

I asked Celeste to lean back against the fence and channel a sense of emotional tension and vulnerability while maintaining the elegance and strength of fashion portraiture. The contrast between glamour and urban decay created something unexpected and cinematic, and Celeste absolutely nailed the mood.

As we continued through downtown Ottawa, we stopped whenever the city offered us something interesting: reflections in windows, architectural lines, unexpected pockets of light, and textures hidden between busy streets. Neil photographed alongside me throughout the afternoon, and this blog includes some behind-the-scenes moments of him at work as well.

Those are often my favourite kinds of creative days.

No pressure. No expectations. No rigid plans.

Just talented people exploring, creating, and responding to whatever the city offers in the moment.

More often than not, those are the days that produce my favourite images.

After wrapping up the session, we headed to Ottawa’s Shawarma Festival where things became considerably louder, busier, and more chaotic, but thankfully the shawarma was excellent and the company was even better.

A huge thank you to Celeste for bringing such wonderful energy to the session and to Neil for joining me on this little creative adventure through downtown Ottawa.

Sometimes the best photographs aren’t found in perfect locations.

Sometimes they’re hiding between sidewalk cracks, construction fences, and reflections in office towers, simply waiting for someone to notice them.
