1,000 People Project | Saif at the Alexandra Bridge

The 1,000 People Project is an ongoing personal project centered around photographing a wide variety of individuals and creating a visual record of the people who make up our communities. The goal is not perfection or polished performances, but authenticity, connection, and documenting people as they are in this moment in time. Every person brings something different to the project, whether through their style, personality, story, or energy in front of the camera. It has become one of the most rewarding projects I have worked on and continues to challenge and inspire me as a photographer.

For this session, I had the opportunity to photograph Saif, an Ottawa-based model who I have previously worked with on my Unmasking Art series. Saif is an incredible model to collaborate with, and every time we work together we seem to create something that pushes my portfolio further in a new direction. That ability to experiment, take creative risks, and come away with images that feel fresh is incredibly valuable as a photographer.

We photographed this set around 6 p.m. during late spring and early summer on a particularly hot and sunny day in Ottawa. The harsh overhead light and intense contrast created conditions that many photographers would choose to avoid in favour of waiting for golden hour. Personally, I think working within difficult conditions can strengthen both a photographer’s and a model’s skills, forcing you to adapt rather than rely on ideal circumstances.

Although the heat was uncomfortable and a breeze would have been appreciated, we spent about thirty minutes shooting around Alexandra Bridge and the surrounding downtown area and came away with images that I genuinely love. I focused on using the hard light intentionally, directing Saif into poses that emphasized his silhouette and shape rather than fighting against the bright highlights that come with midday sun. Shooting in these conditions can be challenging, but I think we managed to create a series of strong images that made the effort worthwhile.

The portrait selected for the 1,000 People Project is not included in this blog post, but these images are the remaining moments captured from our time together that evening. A huge thank you to Saif for another fantastic shoot and for continuing to bring such creativity and energy to every collaboration we do together.
