06 May Jasmine | The First Session of the 1,000 People Project
The 1,000 People Project is a long-term portrait series I created to document people in an honest and meaningful way. Each session is short, simple, and focused on capturing personality, expression, and a glimpse into someone’s real environment. I want these portraits to feel natural and human, showing people as they truly are in the spaces that reflect their life, their work, and their creativity. One of my favourite parts of this project is that it encourages people to slow down and notice the beauty in everyday life, and the unique individuals that make up our community.
The very first session in this project was with Jasmine, a visual artist and model with an incredible sense of style and a personality that instantly lights up the room. On a cold January day, I arrived at her home in Aylmer, and the moment I stepped inside I was surrounded by warmth, colour, and creative energy. Her painting space was set up near a large window by her balcony, flooded with beautiful natural light, and her home was filled with finished pieces on easels, paint scattered across her workspace, and the kind of artistic chaos that feels inspiring rather than messy. Jasmine herself was bubbly, welcoming, and dressed in vibrant colours, which felt perfectly aligned with her work and her energy. Photographing her while she painted felt like capturing her in her natural habitat, giving a real glimpse into what an artist’s everyday life can look like behind the scenes.
Since this shoot, I’ve already had a makeup artist reach out to me after seeing Jasmine’s work, and that was such a nice reminder of the unexpected benefits of a project like this. The 1,000 People Project isn’t about creating perfect images or building a “network,” it’s simply about photographing real people and capturing small honest moments of who they are. But sometimes, when you share someone’s story, it naturally creates little connections along the way.
Jasmine was the perfect first session to begin this project, and I couldn’t have asked for a more colourful, joyful, and inspiring start.
