Cinco de Mayo Vibes in Ottawa’s ByWard Market!

I had the chance to catch some of the Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Ottawa this weekend—and though I only stayed for glimpses, the energy was contagious. Celebrated a day early, the Bytown Market was absolutely alive. The sun was out, the streets were buzzing, and everyone seemed to be dancing, eating, and soaking up the vibrant culture.

The event was a collaborative effort between the ByWard Market district and YZETA Meetings and Management, and they did an amazing job bringing the community together. From Latin beats to delicious street food, it felt like a little slice of Mexico in the heart of downtown Ottawa. A big shoutout to OC Transpo for offering free travel for the event—it made it so much easier (and safer) for folks to come out and enjoy the festivities.

I brought my camera along and focused on capturing candid black and white portraits—little moments of joy, movement, and community. One of the highlights was photographing the performance by the Latin Caribbean Roots Band, whose infectious rhythms had the whole crowd moving. There was a beautiful contrast in documenting such a vibrant, colorful celebration through the timeless lens of monochrome. It stripped things down to raw expressions, body language, and the shared joy of the moment.

Even with just a short visit, I left smiling and inspired. Ottawa knows how to celebrate, and events like these remind me why I love photographing this city and its people.

¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo, Ottawa!
