Creative Warm-Up with Mel
Sometimes the best shoots happen spontaneously. I already had a studio full of black balloons left over from a previous creative experiment, and Mel was coming by to do an Unmasked session for my art project. So I thought β why not get a little extra creative mileage out of those balloons before they deflated?
I asked Mel if she wanted to do something fun and funky before we got into the main shoot, and she was totally on board. She arrived with a beautifully whimsical pastel, galaxy-inspired clown makeup look β her own creative spin that immediately set the tone for a playful and imaginative session.
Mel has such a unique posing style, full of bendy, expressive movements that bring so much character to every frame. We leaned into that energy and captured a mix of dynamic full-body shots and striking close-ups, including a few dramatic black-and-white portraits that contrast beautifully with the colorful makeup and the sea of black balloons.
This shoot wasnβt about perfection or planning. It was about warming up creatively β giving ourselves permission to play, be silly, and see what unfolds naturally without strict expectations. That sense of freedom set a wonderful tone for the more intentional Unmasked session we did afterward.
What started as a simple idea β repurposing leftover balloons β turned into a joyful, expressive, and completely unplanned little project. Hereβs a glimpse into our galaxy-clown balloon shoot β a reminder that some of the most magical moments happen when you let creativity lead the way.
