20 Feb Black History Month Inspired Shoot
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. – Martin Luther King Jr.
Florence came to me with the idea to do an African fashion shoot in light of Black History Month. Florence is an Haitian/Canadian model. She loves doing powerful shoots to speak of the truth of our world today and to remind of events in the past. She recruited the amazing stylist, Fatima, who has done multiple amazing looks on Florence in the past. Florence took initiative to get clothing from Ottawa based African clothing stores because he knowledge of African stylist is more advanced than ours. She also wowed us with her ability to turn a piece of beautiful colourful fabric into incredible head-wraps. There is a skill behind the folding and twisting of the fabric to make it look so nice. That was way beyond me. Florence is so talented it blows me away.
As you can see from photos above, Fatima is an amazing makeup/hair stylist. Florence let us in on a little secret about African Fashion – clothing/accessories do not need to match. American fashion we tend to match our accessories with our clothing. African fashion love lots of vibrant colours and are more carefree about minor things like matching. It’s amazing what you learn through sessions with other talents.
This one piece outfit is from an Ottawa based women’s clothing store, Tunkas Fashion. I absolutely loved this outfit and how well it showed off Florence’s curves. Looking at both sets of photos you can see that Florence folded the head piece completely different! I loved that.
