23 Sep Mature beauty with Darlene
“Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been.” – David Bowie
Darlene is one of the most beautiful women I know. She has a class and elegance to her that really draws you in. I had the pleasure of taking her photo twice now and both times I was very happy with the results. Darlene is also part of my family – not by blood, but through a long-winded web through marriage. She is my stepmom’s brother’s wife. Ok, maybe that wasn’t as wordy as I expected, but either way we are family. Life is pretty amazing when you think about it, relationships evolve and you end up with more really cool people you get to call and love as family. I love that!
Back to the world of photography. Darlene and I did a mini-session at my studio and we were blessed to have Fatima style both Darlene’s hair and makeup. She did such a fabulous job! She always does. Darlene usually wears minimal makeup on a daily basis, so it was a little adjustment to get glammed up. Makeup for photography is different than everyday use. The makeup artists I use are trained to understand studio lighting and how to enhance womens’ makeup when being lit by strobes or other artificial lights. Here’s Fatima’s fantastic makeup and hair.
I love taking portraits of women 45 plus! My favourite part of the full process is giving them the final images and gauging their reactions when they see their natural beauty. Women tend to put everyone else’s needs before their own with family and work and everything in between. It’s nice to take an evening for yourself and get dolled up and have some beautiful photos taken of yourself. It can be intimidating but it is also rewarding. I also love the supportive responses these women get after posting their favourite photos on their social media. You see all these incredible women cheering them on and giving lots of love. This is what makes the whole process so worth while to me. It’s empowering.
Back to Darlene. Red looks so good on her! This dress was a facebook marketplace purchase and darlene wore it best. I was inspired by a photo of Catherine Zeta Jones. She did a cover for a magazine where she was wrapped up in a red fabric and it inspired me to do something similar with the colour pattern. I loved the result!
