Meet Florence, one of my best friends

There are people who you meet that stand out beyond the rest and capture your heart, Florence is one of those people. She is one of the strongest people I know. She has the biggest heart. I did my first shoot with her three years ago when I was starting out in photography. We have been shooting ever since and she is the model I have shot the most. She is my muse.

When I told her I wanted to switch my direction in my photography to showcase mature beauty, which I feel is under represented, she reminded me I have been speaking of this since we met and if I feel the same way after three years I should go for it. Sometimes you need a friend to remind you where your heart lies. I am not sure if it’s because I am getting older myself or if its because social media is full of youth and there are few mature women featured (usually fitness models), but I just feel the empty space. I feel all body shapes, races and sizes of mature women should be celebrated and this is my little way of making a change.

Florence herself is a mature model. I swear you would never tell. She looks much younger than her age and her personality is so full of life you would never know. She is so diverse as a model and such a funny character. I just love photographing her.

The three photos above are styled by Carolyn, an amazing makeup artist and hair stylist. She one of my business partners and she is just incredible.  The lashes used were from another local business owner, Nina, who owns LaashLashes. Her range in Mink lashes is unbelievable and they can be reused up to 20 times.  Ottawa has so much talent it’s actually shocking. Carolyn and I had been planning a sunflower shoot for over a year and I am so happy we finally planned a date and nailed it. Timing is everything. It wouldn’t have been as great if we did it in the winter months.

Florence and I try to do one spring apple blossom shoot each year, but with different styles. This spring we had another amazing makeup and hair stylist, Fatima, do a modern pin up look and Florence connected with a local fashion retailer, Frida’s Attic, that specializes in Mexican designs. Adding colourful clothing to the big bloom was a bunch of fun.

Florence looks amazing in orange. This set is hands down one of my favourite sets of photos I have taken. Makeup and hair were done by Carolyn who is super skilled in her craft. The scarf was made by a local small business owner, Alexandra. She makes really beautiful clothing and accessories with her crazy talented sewing skills. This scarf was made specifically for Florence’s shoot. It was a big hit.

We have a few shoots coming up. I can’t wait to bring more concepts to life with Florence. Although I own a photography business, its important to still have fun and do things you love.
